Easter Eggs-Software Surprises
Easter Eggs are secrets hidden in many pieces of software, from operating
systems and applications to games on PCs and consoles. This book provides
an excellent insight into why programmers add these unofficial features,
and how to access them.

BadCoder has included various Easter Eggs
in his code, so experiment and try to find them, they are not very hidden.
I may release the codes for these at a later date. Some mini eggs are really
just for playtester convenience, or as shortcuts. |
The egg on the right is the No-TV egg,
which helps Jaguar fans keep the TV for games when the rest of the family
want to watch TV. Load the demo, activate the egg, and you'll get a "Transmitter
Fault". The same key makes the screen flash so if you "fake" using the remote
control you can convince your family to go away because there's no TV being
broadcast today! |
The egg on the left shows the enhanced
"Sheep" egg added for Jeff Minter, and you'll find that this egg is unavailable
unless you're a fan. Keep searching for developments of this important egg,
which was added in BadCode3. |
The egg to the right is the Pumpkin egg,
intended to allow Jaguar fans to save on the hollowing out a real pumpking
for Halloween. Just load the demo, activate the egg, and stand your TV in
the window of your house. Instant scary pumpkin for Halloween complete with
flickering candle light. |
This egg is the Snowman egg, a little seasonal extra intended to save the
Jaguar fan from having to go outside into the real world to build a snowman.
Just load the demo, activate the egg, and you have your very own snowy winter
scene, and you don't get cold hands or slip on the ice. No self-respecting
Jaguar fan is going to want to spend time outside when they could
be huddled in the glow of their TV. |
The egg on the right is the enhanced No-TV 2 egg, which helps Jaguar fans
keep the TV for games when the rest of the family want to watch TV. Although
the test screen may be instantly familiar to European, Canadian and Australian
Jaguar fans, it is also used on channels in the US. Look out for secret
enhancements to this pointless egg in demos after BadCode4M. |
